Résumé

Véritable arpenteur de l'imaginaire, Atom Egoyan chamboule toute la grammaire du langage cinématographique en pulvérisant plusieurs concepts de base de la narration de fiction traditionnelle. Ce documentaire propose conjointement un portrait du cinéaste, en même temps qu'un document sur l'oeuvre qu'il a accomplie à ce jour. Nous allons à rebours dans le temps pour évoquer les 13 longs métrages du cinéaste mais aussi ses tout premiers courts métrages dans lesquels on trouve certainement les prémices de son oeuvre future. Mené sous la forme d'une enquête, ce documentaire tente de découvrir le processus de création de l'artiste et d'éclairer l'aspect le plus énigmatique et singulier de son travail : l'écriture.

A true explorer of the imagination, Atom Egoyan revolutionizes the entire grammar of the cinematographic language by demolishing several basic concepts in traditional fictional narrative. This documentary offers both a portrait of the filmmaker and at the same time a record of his work to date. We go backwards in time to look at his 13 feature-length films as well as his very first shorts, which undoubtedly contain the seeds of his future oeuvre. Proceeding in the formof an investigation, the documentary attempts to uncover the artist’s creative process and throw light on the most enigmatic and striking aspect of his work – its writing.
