Résumé

Au début du XXe siècle, Porfirio Diaz règne en dictateur sur le Mexique et n’intervient pas alors que les paysans se font spolier leurs terres par des exploitants de canne à sucre. Emiliano Zapata prend alors la tête de la révolte et devient une légende.

« Nous cherchions, Steinbeck et moi-même, une façon d’exprimer ce que c’était d’être de gauche et progressiste tout en étant antistalinien. J’avais, depuis 1935, l’idée de faire un film sur Zapata. Son dilemme tragique nous intéressait : une fois qu’on a pris le pouvoir grâce à la révolution, que faire du pouvoir et quelle sorte de structure construire ? »

It is the beginning of the twentieth century and Porfirio Diaz rules over Mexico as a dictator, doing nothing to prevent villagers from having their land stolen by sugar cane farmers. Emiliano Zapata is driven to lead a rebellion, becoming a legend in the process.

“Steinbeck and I were looking for a way to express what it meant to be left-wing, progressive and anti-Stalin all at once. I had been planning to make a film about Zapata since 1935. We found his tragic dilemma intriguing: once you have taken power thanks to a revolution, what do you then do with it and what kind of framework do you build?”
