Résumé

Adam, la soixantaine, est le maître nageur de la piscine d'un hôtel de luxe à N'Djamena, au Tchad. Lors du rachat de l'hôtel par des repreneurs chinois, il doit laisser la place à son fils Abdel. Il vit très mal cette situation qu'il considère comme une déchéance sociale. Le pays est en proie à la guerre civile et les rebelles armés menacent le pouvoir. Le gouvernement, en réaction, fait appel à la population pour un « effort de guerre » exigeant d'eux argent ou enfant en âge de combattre les assaillants…

« Sous le style calme et serein de ce film mijotent une douleur, une colère, une rage que l’on sent palpiter au fond des plans. Un homme qui crie confirme que l’Afrique est dans le mouvement de l’histoire et qu’Haroun est un cinéaste important, par son talent d’abord, mais aussi en ce qu’il permet aux Africains de s’approprier leur histoire et leur image. »

Adam is a pool attendant in his sixties working at a smart hotel in N’Djamena, Chad. When the hotel gets taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to give up his job to his son Abdel. He struggles to accept the situation, considering it a sign of social decline. The country is in the throes of a civil war and rebel forces are attacking the government. The  authorities demand that the population contribute to the “war effort” by providing money or children old enough to fight the assailants.
