Benny est un jeune homme révolté qui passe son temps à jouer de la trompette et à traîner dans les rues de New York avec ses amis Dennis et Tom. Hugh tente de faire carrière comme chanteur de jazz et Lelia comme écrivain. Ils sont frères et sœur, et ils sont noirs.

Benny is a rebellious young man who spends his time playing the trumpet and roaming the streets of New York with his friends Dennis and Tom. Hugh, on the other hand, is trying to make it as a jazz singer, while Lelia dreams of being a writer. They are siblings, and they are black.

“Shadows is a film without a plot. Through constant improvisation and bursts of emotion, the film’s tension gradually mounts and simultaneously an image of the city forms in the viewer’s mind. In a way, the film has neither head nor tail. And when the credits roll, nothing much has changed. But this accidental, fragmentary quality is precisely what makes the film so spontaneous, so convincing, so true.”
